Getting there

From school to the canyon

It's a straight shot up Highway 101 from our Resnick campus to El Capitan Canyon — about 100 miles, roughly 2 hours. Leave extra time for Friday afternoon traffic so you're settled before the 5:00 PM Shabbat party.

We're planning to leave school right after dismissal. If your child has a noon dismissal, there may be an option for an early check-in — just call El Capitan Canyon at (805) 685-3887. Or stop for lunch on the way!

    Leave from Resnick ECC

    11960 Sunset Blvd, Brentwood. Head toward the 405 / 101.

    Take US-101 North

    Follow the 101 North toward Ventura and Santa Barbara. Stay on it for about 90 miles.

    Past Santa Barbara & Goleta

    Keep going north on the 101 about 15 minutes past downtown Santa Barbara.

    Take Exit 117 — El Capitan State Beach

    Exit at El Capitan State Beach. The canyon entrance is on the inland (mountain) side of the freeway.

  5. Arrive at El Capitan Canyon

    Pull up to the gate and check in for your cabin. Welcome to camp!

All meals are buffet-style at picnic tables in the canyon and at West Market, freshly cooked on site by SB Event Co. Here's the full menu for the weekend, plus the special dessert and coffee stations the kids will love.

Every meal includes a kosher and gluten-free option.

Where we are

Right next to the Canyon Market

Our cabins are in the Lower Loop, just steps from the Canyon Market and the parking lot — so whatever you need over the weekend is close by.

  • The Canyon Market is a full market right there: food, snacks, drinks, and the basics — including firewood and lighter fluid for the fire pits.
  • Your car is parked steps away — easy to run out for anything, leave and come back, or meet a Postmates / delivery.
  • Most of the weekend's meals and activities happen right here in the Lower Loop too, so you're always close to home base.
  1. Arrive at the gate

    Pull into El Capitan Canyon at 11560 Calle Real, off Highway 101 Exit 117, any time after 4:00 PM Friday.

  2. Check in & find your cabin

    Get your cabin assignment, park, and unload. Cabins come with beds, linens, and the basics — see the packing list for what to bring from home.

  3. Settle in before 5:00 PM

    Change into your white attire and head to West Market for the Shabbat party and prayers at 5:00 PM.

  4. Check out by 11:00 AM Sunday

    Pack up, do one last llama visit if you're joining the scavenger hunt, and hit the road.

Wear white, bring a blanket and your own wine and glasses. We'll be at picnic tables in the West Market. Prayers led by Jason Mesches, dinner at 5:15 PM.

General canyon activities

Beyond our own schedule, El Capitan Canyon is yours to explore. Here's what's on offer during free time — trails, bikes, the pool, and the beach.

The coastline and rolling hills near El Capitan Canyon
El Capitan State Beach and the Gaviota coast — about a 15-minute walk from the canyon.

Hiking trails

Take in sweeping Central Coast views on the canyon's private trails — from the popular Selma Rubin Trail out to the llama and goat farm, plus a few more advanced routes.

Beach cruiser bicycles

Adult beach cruisers and helmets are complimentary for guests (subject to availability) and can be checked out by an adult at the kiosk for up to two hours at a time. We'd recommend bringing your kids' bikes or scooters — with helmets, of course.

Swimming pool & playground

The heated swimming pool sits in the center of the canyon. The children's playground — slide, swings, and jungle gym — is right next to it.

El Capitan State Beach

About a 15-minute walk from the front kiosk: a sandy beach, rocky tidepools, and stands of sycamore and oaks along El Capitan Creek — perfect for swimming, fishing, surfing, and picnicking. A stairway leads from the bluffs down to the sand.
